about

The Last Ovation is about stepping down from one’s identity. I watched both my dad and my stepdad struggle with retirement, when your job is your everything. Someday I’ll play my last show, you know? It’s the brevity of things that makes them worthwhile and I have always been able to find the romanticism and magic of impermanence. Anyhow, this particular song is about a formula 1 driver, semi-inspired by the story of Francois Cevert, who is at the end of the career line, but ultimately pushes on past his prime towards his untimely death.

lyrics

Is this the last ovation
As your car crossed the line
The time has come to take your leave

And the crowd began to rise
But there was silence
Despite the cacophony
You drained out your colors on the street
It was all a race with time

You know I'm in it for the long haul, oh beautiful baby
You know I'm in this game for keeps
But maybe love is also knowing, when you should let go
Just like a tree must shed it's leaves

We're born together
We fly together
We struggle together
We die together

You forgot the competition
You forgot the blinding light
All along you were racing against time
Please don't close your eyes
Alas it seems, we have come to the end
Will you, try to pretend that you will leave
It's hard to say goodbye

Do you wonder how things could have been?
